Before the Spotlight: The Journey of Song Kang Prior to Global Stardom
Long before he earned titles like “Netflix’s Son” and captured millions of hearts in hit series like Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and My Demon, South Korean actor Song Kang was just an ordinary young man navigating teenage uncertainties, family skepticism, and unexpected paths.
While fans today know him for his effortless charisma and striking screen presence, Song Kang’s pre-debut era was defined by quiet determination, shifting ambitions, and a gradual transformation from a shy student into a powerhouse actor.
An Artistic Household and Athletic Roots
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Song grew up in an environment naturally surrounded by discipline and expression. His background heavily leaned toward the arts and athletics: his father was an artistic gymnast who instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for physical fitness, while his mother worked as a piano teacher, filling his early days with classical sounds.
Curiously, his birth name almost turned out quite differently. His grandfather originally wanted to name him “Song Kang-geun,” but his father found it a bit too unusual and trimmed the last part, leaving him with the distinct, memorable name we know today.
Turning Down the Idol Track
With his standout visuals, it comes as no surprise that talent scouts took notice early on. During his youth, Song was approached multiple times by various K-pop agencies hoping to recruit him for an idol trainee track.
However, many fans are surprised to learn that he turned those opportunities down. With characteristic humility, Song later admitted a very simple reason for refusing the scout offers: he felt he couldn’t sing or dance. Rather than forcing himself down a musical path unsuited to his natural inclinations, he redirected his ambitions toward the silver screen, deeply inspired by the captivating performances of legendary Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Overcoming Shyness and Family Doubts
Transitioning into acting wasn’t an instant fairytale. Naturally introverted, Song faced initial hesitations close to home. When he first expressed a desire to act, his mother expressed doubt, gently reminding him of his quiet disposition and suggesting he learn a practical trade instead. Fortunately, his father offered crucial support, encouraging him to pursue whatever truly brought him fulfillment.
Enrolling in formal acting classes presented its own hurdles. Song has openly recalled feeling intensely embarrassed during early exercises, frequently laughing out loud in front of his peers out of sheer awkwardness. Through persistence, he pushed past his self-consciousness, building the emotional resilience required for the craft.
Laying the Academic Foundation
To fully commit to his new dream, Song enrolled at Konkuk University, majoring in Film Arts within the Department of Arts Design. Immersing himself in the theoretical and practical foundations of cinema, he honed his understanding of storytelling, character building, and camera work.
This rigorous academic foundation—coupled with part-time jobs and relentless auditions—finally paid off in 2017 when he landed his official acting debut in the tvN romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover.
From Ordinary to Extraordinary
Though he would later spend years grinding through smaller supporting roles before his explosive breakout in Love Alarm (2019), Song Kang’s pre-debut years reveal a star built on patience rather than instant luck. By honoring his limitations, leaning into mentorship, and trusting a slow-burn process, he laid the groundwork for an extraordinary career that continues to captivate global audiences today.
