The Boy Behind the Screen: Unveiling the Childhood and Early Roots of Song Kang
Long before he earned the global moniker “The Son of Netflix” and captured millions of hearts in hits like Love Alarm, Sweet Home, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet, imaginative boy growing up in Suwon, South Korea.
While fans across the world know him for his striking visuals, effortless charisma, and intense emotional range on screen, his journey began in a surprisingly grounded household steeped in athletics, artistry, and quiet daydreams.
A Household of Athletes and Artists
Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a tight-knit family of four, including his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. Fitness and physical coordination seemed to be coded into his DNA: his father was a former artistic gymnast, and his grandfather had a background in wrestling.
However, despite coming from a lineage of high-performing athletes, young Song Kang didn’t quite feel the calling for competitive sports. Instead, creativity balanced out the athletic energy in his home. His mother worked as a piano teacher, introducing him to the world of music at a very young age. During his elementary school years, Song Kang even won several awards in local piano competitions. Though he briefly put the keyboard away after finding childhood piano lessons a bit too rigid, his early foundation with music would later come full circle, allowing him to authentically play the instrument for dramatic roles and charm fans at global fan meetings.
Blueprints and Daydreams: The Architect That Never Was
Every child goes through phases of imagining what they want to be when they grow up, and Song Kang’s early ambitions were remarkably distinct. Long before the silver screen crossed his mind, he had his sights set on structural design.
In past interviews, he confessed that growing up, he was captivated by “cool pictures” of buildings and architectural layouts. This fascination led to a childhood dream of becoming an architect or a furniture designer. Ultimately, the practical side of childhood took over—he joked that he eventually abandoned the dream because he simply had “no idea where [he] needed to start”. Little did he know, he would instead spend his future constructing intricate, deeply emotional characters for a global audience.
Navigating Youth and Choosing His Own Path
As he transitioned into his teen years attending Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, Song Kang’s striking height and boyish charm naturally drew attention. As he blossomed into a young adult, his looks caught the eye of talent scouts.
In fact, before ever stepping onto a professional set, Song Kang was approached multiple times by K-pop entertainment agencies offering him the chance to train as an idol. In an era where many young Koreans leap at the chance to join idol groups, Song Kang politely turned them down. He realized that his true passion lay elsewhere—he didn’t want to perform on stage as a singer; he wanted to tell stories as an actor.
His cinematic awakening was largely inspired by watching Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio, whose raw intensity and emotional depth on screen left a lasting impression on the aspiring artist. This pivotal realization led him to enroll in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, setting the formal groundwork for his eventual debut.
From a Quiet Boy to a Global Star
Looking back at Song Kang’s upbringing, the pieces of his public persona begin to fit together seamlessly. The discipline instilled by a gymnast father likely fueled the intense physical transformations he later underwent for heavy action roles like Sweet Home, while the artistic touch from his piano-teacher mother nurtured the sensitivity required for complex romance dramas.
