The Rise, Reign, and Return of Song Kang: The Journey of the “Son of Netflix”
When fans talk about the global phenomenon of K-dramas, few names evoke as much excitement as Song Kang (송강). Often celebrated by fans and media worldwide as the “Son of Netflix,” this charismatic South Korean actor has spent the last several years transforming from a promising newcomer into one of the most recognizable faces in international entertainment.
Whether he is battling terrifying monsters, navigating complex campus romance, or portraying a supernatural entity, Song Kang’s journey is a masterclass in dedication, charm, and steady artistic growth.
Humble Beginnings and Turning Down the Idol Track
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up surrounded by an appreciation for the arts—his father was an artistic gymnast and his mother worked as a piano teacher. As a young man, he had varied interests, initially dreaming of becoming an architect or a furniture designer. However, everything changed when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio’s iconic performance in Titanic, which sparked a deep-seated passion to pursue acting.
Standing at 1.86 meters (6’1″) with striking visuals, Song was frequently scouted by entertainment agencies hoping to debut him as a K-pop idol. He repeatedly turned down these offers, choosing instead to focus entirely on his studies in Film Arts at Konkuk University. His dedication paid off when he officially made his acting debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover.
Becoming the “Son of Netflix” and Global Stardom
Song’s breakout moment arrived when he beat out massive competition—reportedly outperforming 900 other candidates—to land the lead role of Hwang Sun-oh in the hit Netflix adaptation Love Alarm (2019). The series became an instant international hit, thrusting Song into the global spotlight.
Instead of getting typecast in romantic roles, Song aggressively expanded his range, leading to a golden era of diverse projects:
- Sweet Home (2020): Displaying incredible versatility, he transformed physically—slimming down to capture the vulnerable, haunted demeanor of Cha Hyun-su, a high school loner fighting for survival in a world overtaken by grotesque monsters.
- Navillera (2021): Earning widespread critical acclaim, Song played a gifted yet troubled ballet dancer who forms a poignant bond with a 70-year-old man chasing his lifelong dream. To prepare for the role, Song spent months taking actual ballet lessons.
- Nevertheless (2021) & Forecasting Love and Weather (2022): These roles further cemented his status as a magnetic romantic lead, effortlessly switching between intoxicating charm and grounded emotional depth.
- My Demon (2023): Playing a powerful, centuries-old demon who loses his powers, Song won the hearts of viewers worldwide alongside co-star Kim Yoo-jung, earning top honors at the SBS Drama Awards.
Military Service and Triumphant Comeback
At the peak of his career in early 2024, Song paused his acting journey to fulfill his mandatory South Korean military service, enlisting as an active-duty soldier in April 2024. True to his character-driven work ethic, he used the period to grow both personally and professionally.
