Precision in Motion: How Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is Transforming Cancer Care
When it comes to treating cancer with radiation, precision has always been the ultimate goal. The primary objective is clear-cut yet challenging: destroy the cancer cells completely while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue as untouched as possible.
For decades, oncologists faced a frustrating moving target. Human bodies shift, bladders fill up, lungs expand and deflate with every breath, and tumors themselves can shrink or change shape over the course of weeks of treatment. Traditional radiation therapy relied heavily on a “snapshot” taken during initial planning, requiring wider safety margins to ensure the tumor wasn’t missed—which unfortunately meant healthy tissues often absorbed stray radiation.
