Beyond the Horse Dance: Does PSY Still Make Music?
It has been over a decade since Park Jae-sung—better known to the world as PSY—forced the entire planet to cross their arms and gallop in place. When “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video to break the one-billion-view barrier in 2012, PSY was thrust into a surreal whirlwind of global superstardom.
For many casual international listeners, PSY became a one-hit wonder of the viral internet age. But what happened after the dust settled? Does the mastermind behind the horse dance still make music?
The short answer is a resounding yes. Not only is PSY very much active in the music industry, but he has also evolved into a powerhouse producer, label executive, and concert titan.
From Global Pop Star to Label Boss
Following the explosive international success of “Gangnam Style” and subsequent hits like “Gentleman”, PSY continued releasing music under South Korea’s powerhouse agency, YG Entertainment. However, by 2019, he was ready for a new chapter.
PSY parted ways with YG to establish his own independent record label and entertainment agency, P Nation. As a founder and executive, PSY has used his industry clout and creative vision to shape the careers of major K-pop and hip-hop acts, signing prominent artists like Jessi, HyunA, Crush, Heize, and the boy band TNX. Rather than stepping away from the spotlight, PSY transitioned into a mentor and mogul who understands the inner workings of the modern music business inside and out.
PSY 9th and the BTS Collaboration
If anyone thought PSY was content to coast into retirement as a legacy act, his studio output proved them wrong. In April 2022, PSY dropped his ninth full-length studio album, appropriately titled PSY 9th.
The album featured a star-studded lineup of collaborations, but its crown jewel was the lead single, “That That,” co-written, produced, and featured on by Suga of BTS. The track was an immediate smash, blending PSY’s signature high-energy comedic flair with Suga’s slick production. The music video racked up hundreds of millions of views, proving that PSY still knew how to command global attention and dominate the charts on his own terms.
The Legend of the “Soak Show”
While he still records and releases music—even teasing work on future projects—PSY’s primary domain today is the live stage. In South Korea, he is practically royalty, renowned for his legendary annual summer concert series known as the “PSY Summer Swag” (Soak Show).
